Seoul Hiking for Beginners: Best Easy Mountains & Trails for Tourists

Beginner traveler hiking an easy mountain trail with a panoramic view of Seoul

Before planning a trip to Seoul, I might imagine palaces, street food, shopping and neon streets.

I probably would not imagine this:

standing on a mountain with almost the entire city below me.

Imagine leaving your hotel after breakfast.

You take the subway.

Less than an hour later, the traffic noise begins to disappear.

There are trees around you.

A stone wall follows the trail.

You climb a little higher.

Then you turn around.

Seoul is suddenly below you.

Apartments.

Mountains.

Palace roofs.

The skyline.

That is when hiking in Seoul starts to make sense.

You do not need to be an experienced hiker to have that moment.

Seoul has mountains and walking trails that can work surprisingly well for travelers who do not normally hike.

What Is the Best Beginner Hike in Seoul?

Choose the hike by the experience you want.
Best First Mountain
Inwangsan
Easy River + Skyline Views
Achasan
Gentler Forest Experience
Ansan
Short City View
Eungbongsan
History + Easy Walk
Naksan City Wall
Very Gentle Option
Seodalsan Jarak-gil
Trail Best For Beginner Feel Plan
Inwangsan Big city views Easy to moderate depending on route About 2 hours for a typical ridge hike
Achasan Hangang + skyline Beginner-friendly routes available Short half-day outing
Ansan Forest + city panorama Beginner-friendly Flexible
Eungbongsan Quick viewpoint Very approachable Short outing
Naksan City Wall + night views Easy walking About 1 hour for the official wall section
Seodalsan Gentle forest walk Very easy option Short flexible walk

Hiking time varies with your exact route, pace, weather and stops. Always allow extra time rather than treating estimates as deadlines.

1. Inwangsan: The Hike I Would Choose for a First Seoul Mountain

1 FIRST-TIME FAVORITE

Inwangsan Mountain

If I had only one morning for an easy Seoul hike, Inwangsan would be high on my list.

Why go: Seoul skyline, rocky scenery, Seoul City Wall, central location and impressive views without committing to an all-day mountain expedition.

Official Seoul tourism information describes Inwangsan as a relatively easy hike and says a ridge hike can take around two hours.

The mountain rises to about 338 meters, but what makes it interesting for a visitor is not simply the elevation.

It is what appears as you climb.

Imagine following the old fortress wall upward.

At first, Seoul is still beside you.

Then Seoul begins to fall below you.

Gyeongbokgung is somewhere beneath the mountain.

Namsan appears in the distance.

The buildings begin looking smaller.

Then you realize something unusual.

You did not leave Seoul to find nature.

You climbed above Seoul.
Beginner warning:

"Easy" does not mean flat.

Inwangsan still includes climbing, stairs and rocky sections.

Wear shoes with decent grip and take your time.

2. Achasan: A Great Choice If You Want the Hangang View

2 RIVER + SKYLINE

Achasan Mountain

Achasan is the hike I would consider if I wanted a city view that feels completely different from central Seoul.

Why go: Hangang River views, skyline views and several relatively easy hiking trails.

Seoul's official tourism guide describes Achasan as not particularly difficult and notes that it offers multiple easy hiking trails.

From higher points, the view can stretch across the Hangang toward Jamsil and other parts of Seoul.

Choose Achasan if:

you care more about a wide river-and-city panorama than being close to Seoul's palace district.

3. Ansan: When You Want More Forest and Less Pressure

3 RELAXED BEGINNER HIKE

Ansan Mountain

Not every Seoul hike needs to feel like a challenge to conquer.

Sometimes I would want trees, a good view and enough energy left to enjoy dinner afterward.

Height: about 295.5 m
Official 2026 difficulty: beginner level

Seoul's 2026 official guide describes Ansan as a relatively low mountain.

From the top, hikers can look toward Inwangsan, Bukhansan and the Hangang River.

4. Eungbongsan: When You Want the View More Than the Hike

4 SHORT VIEWPOINT

Eungbongsan Mountain

Maybe you do not actually want a two-hour hike.

Maybe you want to climb somewhere, see Seoul from above, take photos and still have most of the day left.

That is where Eungbongsan becomes interesting.

Height: about 81 m
Official 2026 difficulty: beginner level

The official Seoul guide highlights the city view from the octagonal pavilion at the top.

Good choice for:

travelers who want a short outdoor experience rather than making hiking the main event of the day.

5. Naksan: The Hike That Feels Like Walking Through Seoul's History

5 HISTORY + EASY WALK

Naksan Seoul City Wall Section

This is the option I would give someone who says:

"I want the views, but I am not sure I want a mountain hike."

Distance: about 2.1 km
Official duration: about 1 hour
Difficulty: beginner

The official Hanyangdoseong route runs from Hyewhamun through Naksan toward Heunginjimun.

Because Naksan is the lowest of Seoul's four inner mountains, its gentle slope makes it approachable for travelers who prefer walking to serious hiking.

This is the kind of walk I would save for late afternoon.

Walk beside the old wall.

Watch the light change.

Look down toward the city.

Then continue toward Dongdaemun as Seoul's lights begin appearing.

It feels less like escaping the city and more like discovering another layer of it.

6. Seodalsan Jarak-gil: What If You Want Something Much Easier?

6 VERY GENTLE OPTION

Seodalsan Jarak-gil

Some travelers hear "beginner hike" and still think:

"That sounds harder than I want."

Seodalsan gives you another option.

Mountain height: about 179 m
Barrier-free forest path: about 463 m

Seoul's official tourism guide specifically recommends Seodalsan Jarak-gil as a beginner hiking course.

The barrier-free forest trail is designed to be easier for older visitors, children, pregnant visitors, wheelchairs and strollers.

What About Bukhansan?

You cannot talk about hiking in Seoul without eventually talking about Bukhansan.

Its rocky ridges, forests and summit views make it one of Seoul's signature hiking destinations.

But there is an important distinction.

Your first Seoul hike does not need to be your biggest Seoul hike.

Bukhansan has multiple routes with very different difficulty levels.

A traveler looking specifically for an easy beginner experience should choose the route carefully rather than assuming every Bukhansan summit route is beginner-friendly.

International visitors can also use the Seoul Hiking Tourism Center Bukhansan Branch for hiking information and preparation support.

What Is the Seoul Trail?

Hiking in Seoul does not always mean climbing a summit.

The Seoul Trail is a network of 21 routes totaling 156.5 km around the city.

Seoul says the routes connect mountains, rivers, neighborhoods, forests and historical areas.

The network is designed for public transportation access, and many sections use gently sloping paths.

This changes the question.

You do not have to ask:

"Can I climb a mountain?"

You can ask:

"How much nature do I want to add to my Seoul day?"

Which Seoul Hike Fits Your Trip?

If You Want... Consider Why
Classic first hike Inwangsan Central location + skyline + City Wall
Hangang panorama Achasan Wide river and eastern Seoul views
Forest + relaxed pace Ansan Low mountain with panoramic views
Quick viewpoint Eungbongsan Shorter outdoor experience
History + easy walk Naksan City Wall and gentle slope
Very gentle forest path Seodalsan Barrier-free option available

What Should You Wear for Hiking in Seoul?

For an easy urban hike, you probably do not need to arrive in Korea with expedition equipment.

But regular city fashion is not always ideal either.

BEGINNER PACKING LIST

What I Would Carry

  • Comfortable shoes with reliable grip
  • Water
  • Weather-appropriate layers
  • Sun protection
  • Phone with enough battery
  • Offline or accessible route information
  • A small snack for longer routes

For rocky, wet, icy or longer routes, more appropriate hiking footwear and equipment may be necessary.

Do You Need Hiking Gear?

This depends on the route.

A gentle City Wall walk and a rocky mountain route should not be treated as the same activity.

Seoul now operates Hiking Tourism Centers aimed partly at making hiking easier for international visitors.

Before spending money on equipment:

decide which mountain and route you are actually hiking.

Your route should determine your gear, not the other way around.

When Is the Best Time to Hike in Seoul?

I would think about the weather before thinking about the Instagram photo.

Season What to Expect What to Check
Spring Comfortable hiking weather can occur Temperature, rain, air quality
Summer Hot and humid conditions are possible Heat, storms, hydration
Fall Popular hiking season Crowds, temperature, sunset time
Winter Cold with possible snow or ice Trail conditions and traction
Before leaving your hotel:

check the weather, air quality, trail conditions, daylight and any temporary closures.

Can You Hike in Seoul at Night?

Some Seoul viewpoints are known for beautiful night scenery.

But do not assume every mountain trail should be hiked after dark.

Access rules can differ by mountain and section, and mountain terrain becomes harder to judge when visibility falls.

For a first-time visitor:

I would favor a daylight hike.

If you specifically want a night view, choose a route appropriate for that purpose and confirm current access rules before going.

A Perfect Beginner Hiking Day in Seoul

8:00 AM - Breakfast
Eat something light and check weather and trail conditions.
9:00 AM - Subway
Head toward your trail without worrying about parking or a rental car.
10:00 AM - Start Hiking
Walk slowly. Stop for the view. This is not a race.
12:00 PM - Back in the City
Find lunch near the neighborhood where your hike ends.
2:00 PM - Seoul Continues
Palace, cafe, market, shopping or another neighborhood.

That is what makes Seoul hiking so interesting to me.

The mountain does not have to consume the entire day.

The Seoul View I Would Not Expect

I think this would be the strange part.

A few hours earlier, I would have been underground on the subway.

Surrounded by people.

Buildings.

Traffic.

Then I would reach a viewpoint.

Stop walking.

Catch my breath.

And look down.

The enormous city I had been walking through would suddenly fit into one view.

Mountains behind it.

The Hangang cutting through it.

Towers rising from it.

Old walls running across the hills.

And that might be the moment I understand Seoul differently.

Not just as a city surrounded by mountains.

As a city built among them.

So if this is your first trip to Korea, leave a little room between the palaces, markets, cafes and shopping.

Put on comfortable shoes.

Take the subway.

Walk uphill for a while.

Seoul may look completely different when you see it from above.
