You've decided to visit South Korea.
Now comes the question almost every traveler eventually asks:
How much money do I actually need for my Korea trip?
Not somebody else's trip.
Not an unrealistic “Korea for $30 a day” challenge.
And not a luxury itinerary you'll never book.
Your trip.
Choose your trip length, number of travelers, hotel style, food budget, transportation, attractions and shopping.
The calculator will estimate your total Korea trip cost, your daily budget and the major categories where your money is going.
Build your trip and get an instant planning estimate.
International airfare is excluded because a flight to Korea can vary dramatically depending on your departure city, season, airline and booking date.
The calculator is designed to estimate what happens after you arrive in South Korea.
1. How Much Does a Trip to South Korea Cost?
There is no single correct Korea travel budget.
A backpacker staying in a guesthouse and eating local meals does not have the same trip as a couple staying in a central Seoul hotel, visiting cafes, shopping for K-beauty and taking the KTX to Busan.
That is why asking:
“How much does Korea cost?”
is less useful than asking:
“How much will the Korea trip I want cost?”
Per person per day as a broad planning target.
A useful starting range for many first-time travelers.
Better hotels, more taxis, premium meals and experiences.
These are planning ranges rather than guaranteed prices.
Hotel dates, exchange rates, destinations and personal spending choices can change the final number substantially.
For the broader 7-day budget breakdown, our earlier guide used approximately:
Budget: $500–$750
Mid-range: $900–$1,300
Comfort: $1,500+
Those figures exclude international airfare and major shopping.
2. Where Does Your Korea Travel Money Actually Go?
Most first-time travelers don't overspend because Korea suddenly becomes expensive.
They overspend because they underestimate one or two categories.
The category most likely to destroy a carefully planned Korea budget?
Shopping.
Especially once “I'll just look around Olive Young” becomes three bags of skincare.
3. How Much Should You Budget for Hotels?
Accommodation is often the biggest fixed expense after airfare.
For planning purposes, you might think in broad ranges such as:
- Budget: around $35–$70 per room/night
- Mid-range: around $80–$150
- Comfort: around $180–$300+
But location can matter almost as much as the star rating.
A slightly more expensive hotel near the subway and the neighborhoods you actually want to explore can sometimes save time and transportation costs.
See what roughly $50, $100 and $200 a night can get you in Seoul.
4. How Much Should You Budget for Food in Korea?
Food is one of the easiest categories to control.
You can eat a simple local meal and spend relatively little.
Or you can build your entire day around BBQ, cafes, desserts and restaurants you've been saving on Instagram for six months.
Broad planning examples:
- simple local meal: roughly ₩8,000–₩15,000
- casual meal: roughly ₩12,000–₩25,000 per person
- Korean BBQ: roughly ₩20,000–₩50,000+ per person
- coffee: roughly ₩4,000–₩7,000
- street food: roughly ₩2,000–₩8,000 per item
5. How Much Does Transportation Cost?
For many travelers, Seoul's public transportation makes it possible to explore the city without building a large taxi budget.
Visitors can use transportation cards such as T-money, and Seoul also offers short-term Climate Card options for eligible transit within its service area.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government currently lists short-term Climate Card options for visitors, including a 7-day option, although coverage and conditions should always be checked before purchase.
Importantly, payment options have also changed.
Since March 17, 2026, international credit and debit cards such as Visa and Mastercard can be used at designated new vending machines to purchase or recharge short-term Climate Cards and buy single-journey tickets.
Transportation payment rules have been changing. Check the current card, machine and ticket type you plan to use rather than assuming every transit product follows the same payment rule.
Regional travel is different.
Once you add Busan, Gyeongju, Jeju or several cities, intercity transportation becomes a separate budget category.
6. How Much Should You Budget for Attractions?
Korea can be surprisingly flexible here.
A day spent walking through neighborhoods, markets, parks and scenic areas may cost very little.
A day filled with observatories, theme parks, performances, tours or premium experiences can cost considerably more.
A simple planning framework is:
- Low-cost sightseeing: about $10/person/day
- Typical sightseeing: about $25/person/day
- Experience-heavy: about $60+/person/day
7. How Much Should You Budget for Shopping?
This is where a $1,000 Korea vacation can quietly become a $1,500 vacation.
K-beauty.
Fashion.
Souvenirs.
Convenience-store discoveries.
K-pop merchandise.
Things you had absolutely no intention of buying until you saw them.
Set your shopping amount separately before the trip. Otherwise shopping can make every other category look inaccurate.
8. How Much Cash Should You Bring?
Your total trip budget and the amount of physical cash in your wallet are two completely different numbers.
You may have a $1,200 trip budget without carrying anything close to $1,200 in Korean won.
For card-using travelers, our 7-day cash guide suggests roughly ₩150,000–₩300,000 per person as a practical starting range, with around ₩200,000 being a useful middle starting point for many travelers.
That is a planning recommendation rather than an official government amount.
See exactly how much cash to bring to Korea for 7 days and where you may actually need it.
9. Does Adding Busan Make Your Korea Trip More Expensive?
Usually, adding another city creates at least one new cost:
Getting there.
Busan accommodation may sometimes offer better value than comparable Seoul options.
But if you are already in Seoul, you also need to account for intercity transportation.
That is why:
“Is Busan cheaper than Seoul?”
and
“Is Seoul + Busan cheaper than staying in Seoul?”
are not the same question.

11. How Can You Lower Your Korea Trip Cost?
The biggest savings rarely come from skipping one coffee.
They come from making better decisions in the largest categories.
Choose the hotel carefully
Moving one level down in accommodation can save more over seven nights than cutting small daily purchases.
Use public transportation
Korea's urban public transportation can keep local travel costs manageable, especially compared with relying heavily on taxis.
Mix inexpensive meals with special meals
You don't have to choose between eating cheaply and experiencing Korean food.
Eat simple local meals sometimes.
Then spend more on the meals that actually matter to you.
Give shopping its own budget
If you know you want skincare, fashion or souvenirs, budget for them honestly.
Pretending you won't shop does not make the shopping free.
Don't add cities just to “save money”
Go to Busan because you want Busan.
Go to Gyeongju because you want history.
Go to Jeju because you want Jeju.
Changing cities creates transportation costs and consumes time.
A good budget doesn't tell you what not to do. It helps you decide what is worth doing.
12. South Korea Travel Budget FAQ
How much money do I need for 7 days in South Korea?
As a broad planning range excluding international airfare and major shopping, approximately $500–$750 per person can represent a budget-oriented week, while around $900–$1,300 provides a useful mid-range planning target. A more comfort-focused trip can exceed $1,500.
How much should I budget per day in Korea?
A broad starting framework is roughly $70–$100 per person/day for budget travel, $130–$185 for mid-range travel and $215+ for a more comfort-oriented trip.
Actual spending depends heavily on whether accommodation is included in your daily figure.
Is $100 a day enough in Seoul?
It can be workable for many travelers when accommodation is already paid separately.
If the same $100 must also pay for your hotel, your accommodation choice becomes much more important.
How much cash should I bring to Korea?
If you use cards for most major expenses, around ₩150,000–₩300,000 per person for a 7-day trip is a practical planning range rather than a total trip budget.
Is South Korea expensive for American travelers?
It depends on your spending category.
Local meals and public transportation can offer good value, while central hotels, premium cafes, nightlife, shopping and upscale dining can raise the total quickly.
Should I include flights in my Korea travel budget?
Yes when planning your real total vacation cost, but this calculator intentionally excludes international airfare because fares vary dramatically by departure city, travel dates and airline.
Calculate your on-the-ground Korea costs here, then add the actual airfare you find for your dates.
Does this calculator use live hotel prices?
No.
It uses broad planning assumptions designed to help you estimate a trip. Always check live accommodation, transportation and attraction prices before booking.
Your Korea Trip Is More Than a Number
Maybe the calculator says $700.
Maybe it says $1,200.
Maybe you add Busan, upgrade the hotel and discover you're closer to $1,700 than you expected.
That's useful information.
Because now you can change the trip before the trip changes your bank account.
But there is another side to budgeting.
Months from now, you probably won't remember exactly how much the subway ride cost.
You may not remember whether lunch was $9 or $14.
You probably won't remember the exchange rate from the morning you arrived.
You might remember something completely different.
The first time Seoul appeared outside the airport train window.
The smell of Korean BBQ after a long day of walking.
A tiny cafe you found by accident.
The view from Busan when the city finally met the ocean.
And that strange final evening when your suitcase is packed but you're not ready to leave.
A travel budget tells you how much Korea may cost.
It cannot tell you what Korea may be worth to you.
So calculate the numbers.
Plan carefully.
Spend intentionally.
And then, once you arrive:
Stop calculating for a while.
You're in Korea.
This calculator and the price ranges in this guide are intended for trip planning. They are not live booking quotes.
Actual costs vary according to travel dates, exchange rates, hotel location, room occupancy, transportation choices, destinations and personal spending habits.
International airfare is excluded from the calculator. Shopping is included only when you select a shopping amount.
Always verify current hotel, transportation and attraction prices before booking.
