“Nothing is technically wrong,” a 53-year-old woman told her doctor. “But I hold the railing now. I avoid uneven sidewalks, and I nearly lose my balance when I pull on my jeans.”
She expected another blood test.
Instead, the doctor moved a chair beside the exam table.
“Stand close to this and lift one foot.”
The patient laughed. “That is the test?”
“It is one piece of the test,” the doctor said. “I am watching how quickly you become unstable, whether one side is different and whether dizziness appears.”
